I did mandatory service after school in Europe. Honestly it's a pretty good experience and should be part of young man's upbringing and education.
It's so different from civilian life and 100% worth experiencing, it sticks with you forever. Although that depends on what unit you join exactly, I was in a heavy/mechanized infantry unit and it really roughs you up, you experience some stuff you never get to see as a civilian. Basic understanding of weaponry, see some irl explosions, feel some recoil, and meet people from all kinds of social classes and education levels. Sit in a rainy forest for a few days, make fires, and all that. Get woken up in the night because there's a simulated raid, try to keep your equipment together in the dark.

Again, I really think it would be good for young men if everybody did a few months after school.
But if you're in the US there's probably no way to do that without getting deployed so take that into consideration.

I was a fuck up so I joined the Army. Became a ranger and was /fit/.
I can say that becoming /fit/ was the best part of the military. If I could show a before and after picture I would but rules are rules. I was a skinnyfat fag but became a lean handsome machine.

Generally nobody dies during training and combat exercises. They won't send you to the desert unless you sign up for it.

The military can make you into a chad in some ways. It builds up physical strength and mental endurance. Yeah, if I was asked to serve I would. I think I'd do well too. You're given orders for everything you do and that's all I need in life. I can barely bring up enough motivation to do something myself, but as soon as someone else tells me to do something, I tend to follow suit. Plus I'm sure it's fun to kill people now and get paid, before it was fucked because people didn't know what war was like and had never seen the horrors of humanity, but like I've grown up on the internet. I've seen Mexican cartels skinning men alive, people getting exploded on liveleak with up close and detailed footage of the aftermath, i've seen straight up snuff films uploaded onto pornhub, I haven't seen any of this first hand, but I can't imagine it being any different. plus if I die, then at least to the handful of people that know me, I died doing something instead of just dying doing nothing which I'm on track to do now

If your militia doesn't serve a purpose, it's a hobby group akin to a hunting club or a camping trip. Nothing wrong with those unless you try to take yourselves seriously as a combat force outside of fun and games. Militias that help with game control and provide security via contracts are useful.

The actual well paid ones have years of experience and are usually from Special Forces or sometimes SWAT. I've known a lot of people in the Military who thought they would just become private contractors and make bank as soon as they finished their time. To nobody's surprise, they didn't get shit. Those contracts are lucrative as fuck, and as a result the standards and competition are extremely high.

That said you could go to some shithole in Africa and become a merc if you really wanted to. Don't expect to get anything out of it except malaria though.
