Not quite. I used to stare at the sun for 30 seconds at a time as a kid. No damage to vision. If you keep the glances brief there shouldn't be any damage. Problem with eclipses is that people will eyeball the thing for several minutes.

you need special eclipse viewing ones. Average sunglasses will not have the adequate protection. It can really do permanent damage no joke. The key here is when people look at the sun during the eclipse thinking it will be ok since it is being blocked out but this fools the eyes since the corona is still visible. Where your pupils would contract to let in less light when the sun is bright, the blocked out sun will cause your eyes to be fooled into thinking its not that bright so the pupils will expand to let in light at normal capacity, meanwhile the sun isn't actually less powerful, it is still burning at full heat and light and you're still getting the light that is coming from around the moon which is equally as power as the sun during its normal brightness.

TL;DR don't be a fucking retard and look right at the sun at any time, even during eclipse. Generic sunglasses won't help you. You'll need special types or improvise with a welding helmet or something with insane UV sunlight protection.

Was pretty cool seeing it get that dark a 1pm though. Clouds also thinned out enough to see it at about 50% so that is something I guess. Birds starting chirping and roosters started crowing after it was over too.

People on a normal day everywhere probably accidentally look at the unblocked sun once or thrice a day without any permanent damage. Do you know why the phenomenon known as "eclipse blindness" is a thing? People are simply looking at the sun for prolonged periods of time (up to minutes even). Glancing at the eclipse today a few times for a few seconds (1-3 seconds) will at the very most cause a mild discomfort. If you are buying the glasses, just save your time ans burn your money or donate it to a Jewish charity.

I didnt bother buying special glasses. I'm not in the total path either, so it only partially covered the sun, like a crescent moon. Didn't really get dark or anything, just some of the sun was blocked. I took like two or three one second glimpses with some sunglasses on.
