Why do you dislike your appearance?

I looked in the mirror today but all I could see was the small crescent-shaped scar between my eyebrows. I got it 4 years ago when my friend (who was actually a 40-year old man) and I were tossing between each other a plastic bottle filled with water, and in the rapidly diminishing light of dusk the ridge of the lid hit me in the face. Since then I've never paid attention to it and it's been essentially invisible to me, but over the last week I've suddenly become terribly self-conscious about it. It started when I looked in the mirror wondering if I looked cute, then the light highlighted it and I felt a soul-crushing sinking feeling.

This got me thinking about how our appearance affects our self-esteem, and why we do or do not like how we look. After thinking hard, I believe that in all but the most self-assured individuals, whether we like our appearance or not is actually an internalisation of what other people define as attractive; we think we look good because other people think we look good.

Throughout all my posts you may have noticed a recurring theme: I wholeheartedly believe that self-esteem should be derived entirely internally, with none being derived through the approval of others. To allow our positive self-regard to come from others is to chain ourselves to the opinions of others; we can become little more than a contortionist baying for applause, or a puppet dancing according to the instructions of its master.

Knowing this, I realised the only reason why I didn't like my scar was because I believed other people would deem it unattractive; I was allowing myself to be the puppet. So now I am on a personal quest to totally divorce myself from the standard metric of attractiveness that has been forced down my throat all my life, and instead come to love my appearance purely because it appeals to me and no one else. I anticipate this will be difficult, but I must try for the sake of my mental well-being.
