Oldfag from 2004-5 here. I started when I was 17. I'm 29 now. I haven't left except for a few years between 2010-2012 where I almost became a normie but everything fell apart so here I am.

I remember comfy caturdays, funny memes that no normies knew of, and raids from my childhood. Pedobears, chargin' mah lazers, and the 4chan Partyvan. Laughing at shit on YTMND or somethingawful, and playing a lot of old-school vanilla WoW.

But all those fun times are gone now. I wasn't happy then, but there were moments that could make me smile, which is far more than I can claim to have now.

I miss the internet before social media, smartphones, and apps.

Also, life doesn't get better as you get older. I'm just as miserable and lonely as I was as a teenager, except now I can drink and have money to buy shit I don't want.

I started posting frequently in late 2006.

I've enjoyed watching the morphology. I wish there was less reddit and normies on the site, but it's interesting seeing how the migration patterns work.

Up until 2008 I was nearly exclusively /b/ and other chans. By 2009 I was heavily /tv/.

/pol/ came later, by 2011, back when it was /new/.

I haven't inhabited /b/ in years. When I would occasionally check back in, and this is 2014 or so, it was unrecognizable. Just a garbage porn board.

/tv/ died and became overrun with filth from /v/ and /co/ and reddit by 2012.

/pol/ became a niche form of new /b/ last year, making it fun, but now it's essentially unusable.

/r9k/ has changed and become dangerously /soc/ and, like /tv/, redditfied and normified, BUT, I've also become increasingly normie over the years, so perhaps it's less an invasion, and more the board itself ageing.

One thing I miss is the inter-chan culture.

I really, really, really hate the reddit and twitter crossovers, and FullCh*n isn't really the same as the small chan universe that comprised An*n IB, 711, 7, and all the others that would pop up for a week before getting v& or running out of money. I even miss the great Kimmo wars.

Now it feels like 4chan is basically an Island among a sea of MySpace clones, and not simply a co-inhabitant on the scuzzy side of town with other fuck ups.

It's been a while. I've not frequented this website for a number of years now, I never even thought about it until now. It would seem I'm at a low point in my life, sitting on my bed alone I suddenly wonder to myself what became of this place. Before even finding this thread it only took me five minutes to notice the massive difference, I'm only posting this because the thread is relevant.

Honestly I cannot remember if it was 2005 or 2006 six, likely the former. I started with /b/ as no doubt many of us did then I found this place. At one point before being taken over by our newfriends and the current shit show this was a great place for conversation and debate on a number of topics. I miss that but it appears that that time is over.

I think I would be classified by most of you as a cyborg. I've my share of experiences in life the women, the travel and more. My ex was a robot I wonder if she's still lurking. Nada dura para sempre kittycat.

I would urge you if possible to experience these things, you get a very short time on this rock and trust me when I say this place is no longer worth wasting a moment of your time on. I'm saddened to a degree by what this place has become but at the same time I expected as much. If I go on now complaining about how the new arrivals have changed this place for the worse then I really will sound like and old fuck. I'm sure many here, older than myself, feel similar. Even the post rate is compatible to the pulse of a dying man. I'm not sure if coming here today gave me some closure or just made me sad.

Prior to that you would have dedicated writefags come in and post new creepypastas almost daily.
As time went on there was no incentive to post their stories there anymore as the userbase became more mainstream.
So now new stories are posted on dedicated short fiction sites and reddit while /x/ is relegated to short, flaccid greentext stories.

I started in 2006 when I was 14. The memes, the irreverent nature of /b/, the mini scandals that were chronicled on ED. Was the funniest shit I had ever seen.

I think /b/ was the only board I really paid attention to for a while. I would go to /s/ and be amazed at the women there. I was very impressed by posters who seemed to know the name of every woman. I aspired to be like them. I was on /v/ sometimes but because I was poor I never played many vidya and couldn't connect with it much. /g/ was useful and I also aspired to be like those guys.

Raids were amazing and I remember staying up to 2AM on a school night so I could listen to Hal Turner raids live. A lot of OC was floating around and it really felt like an event when somebody delivered on their promise to do crazy stunts like sticking scissors in their ass.

No doubt the shitheap of /b/ was fertiliser to the seeds of sexual depravity and dark humour already sitting in my mind (thanks, dad). This alone has fucked me up and gotten me into irl trouble which has irrevocably altered the course of my sorry life. Would rather not dwell there.

Watching Lazytown ironically, being introduced to anime, meme videos and ytmnds. I had constant entertainment and I felt like I was in a special group outside of the mainstream with secret knowledge.

Been on 4chan since day one pretty much. Not proud of it. Turning 33 soon.

I also feel a certain disconnect from the 'community' on here lately. A lot has changed and you grow and change with it. But I can't deny that a lot of things leave me without understanding for the age specific humor and discussions I guess. You learn to grow up, and that arguing with strangers over the internet is a wasteful time sink.

Also,... I miss moot. Having outlived the original founding father of this place makes you feel ancient. I have only vague memories of the times we used to fuck around with the mods like W.T.Snacks and how people had much less 'mainstream' compatibility over all. 4chan used to be exclusive to weeb nerds back then. CP threads stayed alive for ages and we were genuinely grateful to have a place to share our geekiness and retardation with each other. We created our own enclave of weirdness and weebdom, our own wild west.

There were no other chan boards alternatives except this for a long time. The few competitors were lame copies. Except for more vanilla clones like iichan There were no 'memes' in their current form. Everything was a culture in its beginning stages.

If I remember correctly it was around 2008, when I first noticed that everything had changed and was turning downwards. Even in his last Q&A moot said himself that 2006 was the pinnacle of this website and I agree. It was the peak of freedom, the peak of unity we had among each other and the greatest feeling you had coming here. It felt like 'home'. That secret little hideout from the world, which nobody knew and which MySpace kids avoided. Today it is the most mainstream site imaginable and its culture has infected the entire internet in many ways. 4chan has actively formed how people perceive and interact with the internet, yet most people still never heard of this place. Everything went sour after the first big news report of 'Anonymous' on TV.

2007 reporting. I was part of the first wave of "newfags" that turned this site into what it is. That said, I think everything was fine until last weekend. The alt-right march on Charlottesville and the seemingly majority support for it on /pol/ is the only thing I've seen on this site that's made me doubt whether or not I truly have a home here. I don't know what to think about this site's user base anymore. Its not like I've felt alienated before, but these last few days have made me feel irreparably disconnected from a place that I've called my home for an entire decade
