Thaumcraft is great
I was going to try and create a maths app thaumonomicon style, linking groups, rings, fields etc like the game mechanic
Shame I can't code, just gave it up and write it in a book instead

I haven't really played Minecraft since Alpha/Beta but I did find it really enjoyable back then.

I know you want to go for a more technical feel but what about Thaumcraft and Bloodmagic for example? You can automate them and Thaumcraft has alot of technical aspects to it.

Also that's very few mods, why not just pick a big stable modpack like "The 1.7.10 Pack"?
