It's good for brain growth and as an energy source.

Poison is defined by dosage. Eating sugar in its natural form (re: fruit) is completely fine, because you'd vomit before you took in as much sugar as the typical American consumes. Extracting it, then putting it into everything is why it's bad for you. It tastes good because it's calorie dense, which is beneficial to a hunter gatherer/lower primate/small mammal. The individuals most compelled to consume these calorie dense foods had the highest odds of genetic success during times of famine, so their genes were promoted. Through a series of population bottlenecks, almost all of us have a dopamine response to sugar intake, which goes beyond making it taste good, and makes us feel good. A rat hooked up to a dopamine dispenser will hit the trigger for it until it dies. As mammals, we aren't much different, so many of us will consume sugar well into obesity, and as a result, death.

It's an efficient energy source but in nature it's not very abundant
We have chemical processes now that very efficiently separate sugar from the fiber it normally comes with
Like most poisons, sugar becomes effective above a critical intake threshold, and the human body has no adaptation to deal with excess sugar. It's a new phenomenon in our metabolic development
