Bouillon cubes and rice my dude. Buy some onions too. I survived on that shit (+frozen veg and some fruit) at $20 NZD a week.
$2 - frozen veg
$3 - bouillon cubes
$8 - rice
Rest for onions and fruit.

It's insanely cheap and genuinely good.

1) Cut up one or two onions, depending on size and how much you like em.
2) Heat up a pot on medium high heat with some butter and olive oil (if you can't afford olive oil, then just butter is fine)
3) Throw in the onion and cook until they start turning transparent.
4) Throw in one or 2 cups of rice
5) Cook that for 5 minutes, stirring constantly or the rice will burn.
6) Take your bouillon cube and an adequate amount of water for the amount of rice you used (typically 2 cups water per 1 cup rice), and stir that into the rice and onion mix
7) Add 2 bay leaves
8) Cook that like you'd normally cook rice.
9) Add some salt when you're done and enjoy the meal.


This diet is far from healthy, as you're not getting any protein, but it's a life saver when you don't have money.
