The radicals were fringe, and when the USSR invaded to fight back the US backed rebels, it seemed like they were bound to lose against Soviet helicopters. So Afghanistan became a Saudi style state with Burqa and stoning and decapitation and genital mutilation, and so it goes.

Many people are dieing. The Urban areas under Assad's government (which were by no means slums, people could afford televisions and phones before the war) have become war zones where people can't live anymore. The west countryside is vulnerable to constant ISIL raids which consistant of sensless killing of Shia and some Sunnis, rape, and pillaging. Rojava is doing well, though. I can only speak for my country, the US. On the liberal center left, the refugees are mostly harmless but more importantly are cheap labor (in America, we have this idea of "the deserving poor." i.e. unskilled poor people don't deserve any social services)

Though I do agree with you. Slavery does still exist in our country. Though, I don't think it's against poor white people (even though their lives are incredibly tough, just as their black neighbors). Our prisons forcibly employ many people in our country. As well, these prisons have a tendency to have repeat visitors. These prisoners often lose their right to vote, usually for drug offenses. Most prisoners are blue collar, however this country has the habit of arresting more poor black and Hispanic people than poor white people, often for the same crimes.
As well, I don't think most people working in the news media are black or lesbians, maybe a few personalities, but not behind-the-scenes.
