If you still have any faith in humanity at all, you're about to lose it.

Don't stress about what people think about you, if that's the sorta person you are. I cannot remember a single grocery cashier I've ever seen in my entire life except the one that coughed blood all over my groceries.
can you count
can you stand
if you answered yes to both questions, you are prepared

Well having worked as a grocery cashier for 5 years I can tell you the most important thing to do is be cool. 90% of customers will be cool too but when you run into the 10% that aren't you have to be extra cool and remain calm and undisturbed. Also have fun chatting about important events such as boxing matches and sports games or anime/vidya conventions if they're wearing clothes from said hobbies.
OP, does your city charge for bags? Some people may get upset when you ask them but just keep your cool and everything will be alright.
It's not that bad, anon. You meet some cool people, you meet some bad. Most are just fine.

Don't take anything too seriously, also once you get a rhythm going smoke weed before every shift

It will be hard for a robot
It will get a just little easier every week.
Don't quit,
Remember people and their preferences, smile, scan fast, have a notebook with produce codes.
Ask if IPM (items per minute) is noted by your management, you might be looked at fondly for being fast and efficient.
