Used to freelance with web development so I'm not cutting edge on what exact technogies you should learn but I can guarantee you can make some spicy stuff after a year or so.
I used to think "I'll never be doing all this coding business" then after a few years there I was and am.
CodeAcademy seemed to be quite tedious from what I remember and I guess you didn't like it either but some people do so its worth mentioning.

Just keep on top of trying to better yourself and take time out when you need it, no point in cramming it in when it won't go in, take it slow.
Go Front end developer I reckon it'll be much more suited to you.
All in all its up to you, this is just an option I found very nice and easy to slip into and you don't even have to be a designer to do it either, you can be given something straight from Photoshop and be told " make a website like this "

Learning constantly I guess you're right although it's much less the case with Front End devving than other code / programming sectors by a long run iirc and you don't have to freelance, you can full time it at a firm and there's lots of jobs out there for it.
