If someone told you to calm down, it meant that you did not appear calm. Try to find what makes them think this way and fix that, even if you believe they are wrong.

Personally, nobody has ever told me to calm down because I am a very happy-go-lucky guy who always smile and laugh even when life decides to give me some shit to deal with. Some people have critized me of being insensitive for never taking anything seriously though.
