Why? I'm a nerd but I've never been a Japanophile. I've seen like 3 animes and two of them were movies and one of those was Grave of the Fireflies which is basically a Western-style story told through anime. I would absolutely love to visit Japan but I would never live there.

I don't feel like giving up citizenship in the country I was born in just to move to a foreign country with a language I'd have to learn how to speak.

Where do you live that having $900 worth of clothes is a big deal? Some third world shithole? Where I'm from you couldn't even get 4 decent casual outfits for $900, and an off brand formal jacket would set you back at least $400 if you're lucky.

Japan is a very ethnically homogeneous country. 98.5% of people in Japan are Japanese. The remaining 1.5% are almost entirely Asian, from China, Korea, Philippines, Vietnam, etc. Everyone is polite and friendly and Japanese, then one day you meet a white person. You're a polite, friendly Japanese so obviously you won't be rude or discriminate but you've simply never met a white person before. It's outside your experience. They're clearly not Japanese, they're clearly an outsider, and the experience of being treated like an outsider can be construed as racism.

Since everyone in Japan is Japanese, it's an exclusive country. You're either Japanese, or you're gaijin. It's a different culture compared to the inclusive US, where the country is composed of all different ethnicity.

Not racist, just used to a nearly 100% Japanese population and largely ignorant of the world outside of their tiny island nation. They may have some ridiculous stereotypes about you (again, out of ignorance), they may be surprised by your appearance, they may be afraid to talk to you as they are under the assumption that you can't possibly speak any Japanese and Lord knows they can't speak English. But they aren't purposefully offensive or hateful towards you.

If you aren't an absolute twat and make an effort to be a decent person, you'll be treated fine.

Go into the countryside though and you can very probably find an obaa san who has never seen a non Japanese person before.

it's also important to mention that even though Japan is ethnically homogenous it's still fundamentally a country filled with individuals with a diverse range of opinions just like any other country. There's no way to know how people are gonna treat you. There are the nationalistic conservatives who scream white piggu go home shit and there's the Pacifists who believe the Japanese defense force should be dismantled.

What this anon says about the "otherness" is very true, every gaijin WILL experience this. If you choose to live in Japan then you may experience a "gaijin bubble" effect where most of those who you interact with are also foreigners in Japan. It's very hard to escape this unless you actively learn the language quickly and make a point to interact with Japanese.

That being said it's not really that big of a problem imo. Even if you experience "otherness" it's still a nice place to live. There are pros to being an eternal tourist.
