I commuted too, so I missed out in the dorm experience. I studied history and I'm a teacher now. Not a lot of money but I enjoy it. TU has a big gay community, but it's all SJW, artsy tumblr types. No offense if you fall into that category.

Maryland isn't the best state to teach unless you buy into a very liberal education system, students as victims mentality and acceptance of bullying/bad behavior.

Part of the reason I got into teaching, apart from a love of history, was to help kids who were picked on and such. If you stay in MD, just keep away from Montgomery and Baltimore counties, or the surrounding areas.

I had some more violent students, but drugs will still a concern at the middle school I worked at. Based on my own experiences, having an in with a school goes a long way. Make sure you keep them apprised of your progress and see about doing any classroom observations or student teaching there if possible. You may have to use public schools, though.
