I have been obsessed with the chinese population in Australia for the past few months and i will share what i know.

i will need to preface by saying a country is made of two things, the number of people in a given area, in this case it would be the cities of Australia, and the gdp of the area, which i will refer to as cities from now on. Sydney has a gdp of $400billion which makes up 24% of Australia's total gdp then we have Melbourne which makes up 18% of total gdp. Sydney and Melbourne alone makes up 42% of Australia's total gdp, add brisbane and you have 3 cities which makes up 52% of Australia's gdp. Anyway when it comes to speaking of Australia, and Melbourne is all that matters.

From this point onwards i will only look at Sydney because it holds the most of of australia's gdp. (you may apply my methology to your own cities as you see fit) it's effective area is 2000km2.

lets look at this picture from the 2016 census data on ancestry. Chinese only makes up 8% of Sydneys total population. I will first state a few problems with this and by extension the limits to of the census.
1) census only includes people who stays in Australia for more than 12 months out of a 16 month period. Australia is a hotspot for foreigners staying less than 12 months
2) most chinese are students living in houseshares paying cash to the landlord and they dont stay in a houseshare for a long time. Thee food they have no stable residential address for the census to include them.

So, Sydney's urban area is 2000km2 (gccsa is 12000km2) which means most of Sydney's $400billion gdp is compacted into 1/6 of sydney's land area. Then you have the right side of Sydney which is the side that matters.
