Learn hiragana and katakana first obviously. Afterwords read a grammar guide, Tae Kim's or Genki are both solid choices. You can read either or both. Once that's done you can start reading beginner manga such as Yotsuba, there's a pack for beginners to read yotsuba raws with the intent of learning jap, or farm Kanji with the core2k anki deck.
