I never lived in Japan, but I did visit for a few months. I tried to rent a small studio there and they make you pay like 3 months rent in advance because they're scared you're gonna pay the down payment then run off when the rent is due. It's the same situation for a phone, they're scared you'll run off, so you have to pay the entire phone's cost up front, no payment plans.

I went to Japan on exchange a few years back and the experience was overall pretty good because I got to do what I wanted.
I've got an obsession with classic Japanese vending machines so I got to visit a bunch of those which was sweet.

I'm here on my third time, lived here a total of 5 months, and recently passed JLPT N1, looking to live here for at least 2 years for some shitty school. Overt racism like being refused at a restaurant because you aren't Japanese is very rare, only happened to me once. But this whole thing that if you're foreign you're definitely gonna get laid isn't true.

If you're white and over 5'10"/other race and over 6' then yes. If you're Asian and have really good Japanese (or English) then you have good chances too. Otherwise it's really hard, especially if you are trying to speak Japanese rather than using English on those gaijin-hunter types.

I think this is true, I only saw kids with anime merchandise when I was there (basic stuff like Youkai Watch and Kemono Friends). They like Disney and the minions a lot but anime is not as big as people think.

I went and got a lot of questions about where I was from, paired with distrusting looks and less than courteous service. The second we said we were Australian we got the warmest reception from every single place that I was mind-blown. There was one place in Kyoto that wanted to kick us out because they thought we were burgers. When they realised we were australian they not only gave us a great table, but gave us a waitress who was assigned primarily to our table, despite the whole place being busy. Ended up spending roughly $80 each there, which is fuck all for the quality of service and sheer quantity of food and drink we had. Japan a best. Wear an aussie flag hat or something.
