Jap teens are much more behaved and overall seem less slutty, but ive listened to them talk and they have similar personalities to western teens. Always on their phones, using social media like Line and Mixi constantly, and talk about stupid shit

The entire joke about the manga and the anime is that it is largely Tomoko's fault that she isn't popular. The only things that are stopping her from making friends are her own insecurities and misguided attempts to be what she perceives as "cool". For the most part, the people she interacts with are friendly and accommodating towards her and she messes it up anyway by being an awkward spaz. This is better showcased in the later chapters in which she starts getting out of her own head more and begins accruing a circle of friends without even trying. She can even communicate with most people these days without shitting herself.

Does anyone wonder if Tomolo Kuroki would like the Death Grips? Or how she'd react if she listened to their music?

it's painful to watch
kind of like how curb your enthusiasm is painful to watch, but significantly less relatable for people that are not have never been and never will be young japanese girls
so I believe where it's within the realm of possibility it's realistic
