I think the main risk is if you instinctively free yourself after you lose consciousness, or someone finds you. You pass out quickly, but it can take 10+ minutes to die, so you can end up with brain damage.

Partial-suspension hanging (door hanging) is a meme, it requires a very precise knot around the neck to pinch the primary artery to the brain that results in a 5-15 second consciousness loss. Most of the time, the knot doesn't fully close that artery and you lose consciousness in more like a minute and a half. On top of this with partial suspension, when your body goes into shock and starts thrashing, there's a chance you could knock yourself down resulting in permanent severe-moderate brain damage as opposed to death. Even if your body doesn't dislodge itself, you will have the most painful minute and a half imaginable.
Hanging, in general, is very unreliable and painful, especially partial suspension. Inert gas asphyxiation (exit bags) are more reliable because if you fail the procedure you can immediately rip the bag off and prevent permanent brain damage, but if you fuck up a hanging it's very difficult to escape and save yourself from a painful death/failed suicide.
