It's actually not surprising that r9k would have lots of smart people in it.
First of all, based on a survey taken in r9k, over half of r9k is made up of INTPs, and INTJs, which have the highest average IQs for personality types.
Second of all, the futher a person is from average intelligence, the more likely they are to be a virgin. There's probably many reasons for that, but it suggests a place like this would have lots of very smart and very stupid people.

I learned how to read and do basic maths on my own when I was 4 yo.
Later when I was schooled I got perfect grades without any effort or work until high school.
In uni I learned how to work for good grades and went back to top tier again until I dropped out due to health problems and became a robot.
