It's easier to list the anime I don't like. Nyaruko, popular long-running shonen, Gabriel Dropout, shows that really drag on or over-rely on character archetype subversion.

Some shows I did like:
>Parasyte, because it was "so bad it's good" and "good" at the same time.

Haven't watched it in a long time but Elfen Lied holds the title of being the only anime that's ever left me traumatised.

Durarara's fun, it's a character study of quite a few different characters.

My Hero Academia is standard shonenshit but damn if it isn't well-crafted shonenshit.

Mob Psycho 100 really hit me hard, as someone who's younger brother also is doing magnitudes better than I am. It's a beautifully animated weird ass show.

Off the top of my head these are the series I've liked the most. LotGH in particular for me is probably the greatest thing I've ever watched and will ever watch, my regret is I can never watch it for the first time ever again.

Plenty of other less serious anime that I've enjoyed but they didn't move me like the above ones did, or otherwise weren't a great story like Psycho Pass. Things like Haruhi, GuP, Mirai Nikki are fun but can't really be at the top of the list

Gundam. Usually contains a good mix of feels (spoiler: most of the feels are "wow everything sucks") and dank giant robot battles

0079 and Zeta are essential. Turn A is recommend because I like it and want to put it in the post.

Seraphim Call isn't particularly great, but it does some pretty interesting things. Worth a watch in my opinion

Yeah no mate, SEL is made for people who like information technology and the concept of ubiquitous information transfer. Eva does use too much christan symbols but if youre focused on that you miss the point of the show (that it's important to make connections with people). I didn't really like NHK so I kind of agree with you on that point. The reason I think elfen lied is edgy is because it has to use graphic violence and gore to get the point across (which isn't a bad thing by itself) where as other shows with the same message did it with better style/taste/subtlety. You should really check out Here and There, Now and Then or even XXXHOLIC.

Elfen Lied was the most shallow attempt at being a deep, compelling story that I've ever seen. I can't really put my finger on it, but so many things were incredibly concientidial and therefore just broke the immersion of the story for me.

The problem with recent shows is that they rely heavily on cute girls and moe; they're much less accessible from someone who isn't used to anime than the typically recommended shows from 10-20 years ago. We don't really have proper gateway shows for audience older than 12-15 year olds like Ghost in the Shell anymore.

Still, if you want fun shows from this year, then try Made in Abyss, Princess Principal or Youjo Senki. Be aware that they're quite specific though and very different from western TV shows.
