I prefer a firm poke or vigorous thrusting motion. Years back someone told me I had ugly fingers so I became even more self conscious. Since then I push with my fingertips to open doors or press buttons as much as I can. I especially like when I find a heavy door that takes considerable force. I try to remember an cycle through which fingers to use so they get even workout. right hand, left hand, and depending on resistance one, two, three, or four fingers. I also do claw pushups, but it will be a long time before I can do one finger pushups.

USually smashing it for no reason

I press a lot harder on control sticks than buttons for some reason. Playing smash especially, it's easier to do footsies and stuff when you just click it around hard. Buttons are more delicate, you gotta be careful.
