Alot of factors really. The job market hasnt been as kind to many, price inflation and a lack of a liveable wage, teens and young adults raised with mentality that things will just be given to them, factor in poor decisions and poor hindsight and prospects for a good future, having a plan B, much less a plan C, add to that how much social media and entertainment of the like sucks up a persons productivity and you have a mix of different flavors of failures.

Gen x was raised by television.

It's a lot harder to get started than it was the last few generations where they could find work in their field and actually move up. I graduated three years ago and basically got really crafty into keeping myself afloat. I finally have a place I can afford, a gf, and I work regularly in a field I find rewarding. Pretty much everyone else I know is one the verge of giving up because they don't try thinking outside the box of what they expected to do after school.

dad has an extremely short temper, would always have me help fix stuff on the house but would just call me a retard or something 10 minutes in i would basically stand there and do nothing
as soon as mom gets home from work she would just watch tv and do nothing else
first childhood friend i brought over dad would sometimes yell at friend so i just figured it'd be best to go to their houses. Dad gets mad about using gas so i just stopped going to friends houses all together, which eventually just stopped me from looking for friends.

Capeshit has always been around, but in the 40s or 50s you'd buy your weekly Superman comic read it within 10 minutes, then have to go outside and do something else.
