That's the thing though. Your conception of the 80's is better than the 80's actually was. Nowadays you can download any 80's movie you want, emulate every nintendo game, and listen to vaporwave all day.

Now, growing up in the 80's would make you less likely to be a robot. One would impelled to actually experience the world, and there would be fewer barriers to being a normie. Methinks this is really the kernel of it all, and that the aesthetics are just a bonus. At least that's the case with me.

In 80's japan (and still today), they wore much less makeup, and my impression is that it wasn't uncommon for women not to wear any makeup at all back then. Goes to show how much diet/exercise matters.
