I'm not around all the time but I have seen some small cases of it but I don't think she does it intentionally. I don't think in her heart she prefers any of her daughters. I think she sees it as the youngest one needs the most care because she's the youngest and she always relies on the oldest one because she's the oldest and they end up having this really close dynamic. It's probably frustrating for a middle child. She probably has shown some preference more often than she would admit, she's not perfect.

My niece is 10. I have more than enough money to support her, I'm just one guy and I live far below my means. Taking on a kid her age wouldn't be a huge blow to me at all but I'm just one guy. I don't have a wife or anything to look after her when I'm working and I don't have any experience raising a child, it's not the ideal situation. I feel like as a single dad, I would be mediocre. I love her and I'd try my best but I have no confidence in myself.

Lvl 36 wiz here, some times I've played with the idea of adopting a kid. Haven't checked if they'd let a single guy adopt or anything. But it's the same thing I guess, no clue how to raise a kid, feels as if I was more ready for the task in my early 20's, maybe because I had to look after my little sister a lot back then.

I don't think you should go so far as to let her move in, but that doesn't mean you can't play a more active role in her life. Hell you could even let her stay the weekend to get some breathing room away from the family now and then. You said it yourself, being the middle child sucks. You can still take her out when her mother gets overwhelmed and provide an ear to listen when it feels like everyone else is too busy to care.

The crux of the issue seems to be whether or not this is good for her. On one side, she's only 10 and still has a lot of growing up to do. Learning to live with her family is something that's absolutely imperative for her, because if she loses that connection it will come back to haunt her later in life. Taking in a child is a big responsibility maybe you can offer her baby steps? She could come over for weekends or on vacations just to get some time away from the situation that's upsetting her. Having a good male role model is really important for children and you sound like you can provide that but taking in a child is a lot of responsibility. I get it's family and you love them but escapism is common for children going through loss and fracturing the family unit further may do more harm than good in the long run.
