Why did the classic serial killer go extinct? We hardly hear

Well there's the Long Island serial killer still at large, and plenty of others as well I reckon, killing prostitutes and homeless.

Security cameras exist. Would-be serial killers get caught after one or two murders nowadays. Back in the era before cameraphones, GPS tracking, security cameras, and more advanced DNA forensics it was almost impossible to catch random killers without a clear motive unless a witness saw them. Now the police have eyes everywhere and technology that borders on magic to locate any person in any corner of the nation. Edgy faggots who dream of being serial psychos end up on the registry when they get caught cutting up pet kittens at 6 years old.

Because we're in the digital age. There are cameras everywhere, someone's always around to record or take a picture.

Hell, those two girls on Fox News a few months/year ago who explored abandoned railroad tracks and were kidnapped/murdered by some deranged homeless man recorded the homeless man commanding them where to go as hostages on their phones and that's how he was caught.

No matter how good the serial killer is, they always leave a footprint behind. Our LE and Forensics are really good and they can just catch people with DNA or other shit.

Not to mention all original serial killers get caught because they got too comfortable and careless, or because they got too cocky and mocked the police.

Are you talking about the Delphi murders? Because that hasn't been solved. They recorded the murderer approaching them then the girl shoved it in her pocket so the rest is only audio -- of him directing them where to go and raping and killing them so it won't be released. They have his voice and a grainy face. They actually just released a sketch yesterday. No one can recognize him apparently.

They exist, and probably in greater numbers than before, but they aren't interesting any more compared to all the shit happening in world news, such as wars across the Middle East, war in Ukraine, mass migration into Europe, right vs left politics across the Western world, North Korean missile tests, Trump, ecological catastrophes, etc.
The news has generally become much more interesting than 10-20 years ago.
(Ever since the fall of the USSR, really).

Serial Killers were popular during times of relative peace in international politics, so they were an alternative for news sources to show in order to keep people scared/interested.
Also, the digital age allows for blood, murder and explosions to be broadcast in HD quality live from Syria, so nobody has the attention span to care about specluative descriptions of a serial killer's antics over months.
This isn't like 2003 Iraq where you get a 144p potato 10-second clip taken by a shaky mobile phone camera depicting some barely visible, vaguely arab looking guy shooting someone in the head from 500 meters away with no sound.

Also, yes, they have generally been replaced with mass shootings too.
