Owning a home isn't that hard. If you really wanted one you'd make it happen. I've seen nice ones go for $5k as part of unpaid tax shit where county basically gives the house away. Other times they were sold at real value between $20k and $60k. Even flipping burgers you can afford a downpayment and mortgage on $60k.
