Are there girls who actually read books and don't have to have their picture taken while doing so to prove it? They just do it? Because that's all I see with girls.

>>38440270

No not really. I read a fuck ton because I find it more enjoyable than the watered down, changed stories that Hollywood spits out. In the fiction department at least. Even fiction still expands one's mind and imagination, gets you thinking better and more effectively and learning how to communicate your thoughts better with a bigger vocabulary.

Right now I'm reading all those Barnes and Nobles bargain bin classics that are like $8 for a volume of 5-6 novels by classic authors like Vernes, Wells, Burroughs etc. It's quite enjoyable.

Dude, I had it even worse than you - because Stacy actually *liked* talking to me about books.

That's secretly the worst outcome of all. You know why? Because Chad has never opened a book in his fucking life. By being the little book faggot hanging around with Stacy and talking to her about books, I was filling that hole in Chad's portfolio. "It's a good thing anon is around, I wanted to ask him if he's ever read any Herman Hesse...before I go fuck Chad later. Anon is so stimulating!"

Fuck you, Stacy. Never again.

Okay first off, not true. Sure, he has a few duds out there, but he is a good author. What the fuck anon?
Also, why? Diseases are interesting. Plagues are so neat. It just really makes you think when you the death tolls from history's biggest epidemics, how far medicine has come. It is very interesting.

>>38445065
Anything in the western canon. Try Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Dante, Chaucer, fucking anybody. I can't recommend any good horror novels since I'm not into that, but there is way better sci-fi out there than Dark Tower such as Gibson, Heinlen, Dick, Asimov, and a fuck load of others I'm forgetting.
>>
>>38445026
By making that statement you implied that you either are too much of a pussy to read his novels or you have too many chromosomes from your inbred family to understand his books. I personally don't like his work because I don't like the genre, but I'm not going to announce to the world that I should be euthanized by saying that the guy who wrote the Shinning and Dark Tower is shit.

Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption is as close to a technically perfect novella in every way as English-language literature has ever produced.

It's as economical as Hemingway and as lyrical as Fitzgerald, and it has an utterly flawless story structure.

The only novella I can think of that even competes with it is A Christmas Carol.

King has put out a lot of hack work, but when he takes it seriously he's very, very impressive.

But mental illness is cool too. It's shocking to read how they would try to "cure" schizophrenia and other diseases as early as 30 years ago, isn't it? Even though the mental health care system in America is still garbage, it sure is better than it used to...

Yeah.. And thank you for this (You), anon! Sometimes I really feel bad because I can't really relate to anyone. But then I remember that conformity is, in a sense, a modern disease in itself. Most women do only just like to hang out with friends and have sex, drugs, such and such. Which is fine, power to them or whatever. But it makes it awfully hard to relate, and that is why I have only one friend who is also a girl, and we are each other's only friends. It is nice. So at this point I don't really want to fit in, anyway, really... plus I probably have autism and am getting testing for it soon and that might be a big reason why I am unable to.
But really thank you for this (you). It made me happy. I like the way you type and word things, anon. Have a good evening.

By reading someone doesn't imply they are a literature aficionado you fucking moron. Nor does someone do that by claiming they love to read, because as we've established, that's a purely objective metric that has nothing to do with quality.
I mentioned my background with literature because I wanted to let you know I wasn't strictly arguing as a casual reader, that I have an understanding of your perspective.
>>
>>38445797
Epic poetry is not an alternative to a 20th century prose horror writer, it is quite literally a different medium, and neither of those writers are similar in their storytelling style beyond what has seeped into all writing through their major influence.
Actual alternatives for King (and I don't know how O High Arbiter of taste over there would feel about these guys, but I like them well enough) would be someone like Jeff Vandermeer or China Mevielle. New Weird in general is pretty influenced by King, as much as people want to force the Lovecraft meme there.

Every single time some faggot has told me they love to read, it's been in response to them seeing me read a book or me mentioning a book I read, as if it's a shared commonality. I'm aware this is how people relate in a social setting, but it's retarded for the guy who read hunger games to think we have something in common because I am reading Demons or some other book that makes me look a pretentious cunt. It's like engaging with a marathon runner by saying, "You run marathons, no way! I walk down to my mailbox every day. Shit's pretty crazy, man. I've always loved walking with my legs, makes me feel mobile."

I mentioned that I have no real alternatives for good horror books since I don't read much in that genre, mentioned the good sci-fi authors I knew. Sorry you don't feel like it was good alternative, trying to say his time would be better spent on other authors.

You might as well have recommended Stanley Kubrik or Van Gogh since you were recommending a different medium.

So is it an insecurity thing combined with a superiority complex (which I guess inherently stems from insecurity)? If you're inherently acknowledging these people are casual readers, why do you expect them to understand the gravity of the work you're reading? Media is a social construct, it's not an instinctual concept like running with objective metrics like miles. A much fairer comparison is a foreign language speaker who doesn't know what a marathon is besides the fact that it deals with using legs making the same comment.

why do I have to have to be insecure to dislike something

Well I'm gaging the insecurity from you calling yourself a pretentious cunt for reading a big book in public

Regarding works of fiction, why would you choose to read the book instead of watching the movie if the author can literally show you his artistic vision, with full detail and music accompaniment, rather than forcing the reader to infer what it means and leave it up to interpretation?

>why would you choose to read the book instead of watching the movie instead of watching the movie if the author can literally show you his artistic vision, with full detail

Because oftentimes those things get butchered in translation.

>implying any medium is objectively better than another
Retard alert

if you want a good example of what books can do that movies can't, go read ubik and three stigmata of palmer eldritch. the narratives are just too confusing and won't translate to film, they are both very highly acclaimed books by PKD but they do not have movies because it would almost impossible to translate.

Okay for one, prose allows you to control the pacing in a scene in a way that is impossible in film. If an author wants to use, for example an advertisement plastered on a wall as a thematic tool or to balance a character or whatever, he can spend literal pages on that advertisement, describing it and using it as he sees fit without using a second of "time" on the action in the scene.
In a film he either needs to let the camera lay on that ad for a ridiculous amount of time or have a character clunkily give the same explanation a third person narrator or free indirect discourse can provide.
A more simple example of this is a description of a fight. A writer can describe every minute action that happens in a fight, but a film must use things like slow motion, excessive cutting to match that level of descriptiveness.
For another it allows the thoughts of a character to be easily expressed without interrupting the story. It's once again an issue of pacing and time. A voice over has to be used, which takes time. A character can't express complex thoughts that would be like a soliloquy read aloud on the screen without derailing a scene, but in a book it's easily and frequently done.

A girl approached me while I was reading in a bike trail once. In less than five minutes of conversation I learned that "OMG I love reading" means "I have read Harry Potter and two Game of Thrones books".

Tolkien in my experience can attract roasties, but what does /r9k/ think about the guy's letters along with the Silmarillion and such?

>f watching the movie if the author can literally show you his artistic vision
What? The author rarely has anything to do with the "artistic" vision with adaptations.
