A lot of Americans get bottled up because of various insecurities and never learn how to make love properly. American society is very touchy about how sex is taught and explored, so it's usually kept taboo when you're young and developing.

Other Americans take it to the other extreme and think sex has to be like a porno, or they compare their performance to porn stars or whatever. They don't understand that the actors are consciously putting on a show for other people. These people are often reactionaries to the prudishness they experienced growing up.

I'd expose my kids to sex as soon as they were capable of being aware of it. Not literally, but I don't think I would hide anything from them like it was some kind of big secret, which I think contributes to American insecurities.

Maybe relevant: Americans are also scared to death about the idea of public nudity. As in, watch any episode of a travel program about Finland, and going to sauna.

Maybe they're intimidated and don't want to do anything perceived as inexperience or something that makes them feel self-conscious. This goes back to our colonization. The East Anglian puritans that colonized New England massively affected our sex lives. Now we have had the Sexual Revolution, and Sexual Liberation, and so promiscuity is pretty much ubiquitous, although Gen Z supposedly is less so. However, the Christian moralistic outrage culture of the puritans has largely been supplanted by the social justice movement, who is now the prime mover behind regulating our sexual activity outside the bible belt. They have no problem with promiscuity, but they have a problem with men. Women are not expected to be active or enjoy sex because PIV = rape, and men don't try anything new because there's no point in doing anything new, it'd even be a problem for them at colleges and such. This doesn't stop people from fucking all the time using Tinder and such, and people are too stupid and irresponsible to care about STDs.

Prostitution used to be illegal because it was seen as immoral and damaging to the family, now it's still illegal for those reasons, plus it is viewed as the objectification and subjugation of women, and is equated with female enslavement.
