why are we so afraid of death?

We are afraid of death, because we believe that it is a bad thing. We believe that dying is one of the worst things that can happen to anyone. In reality, we shouldn't be afraid of it. We should accept it and move on.

Fear of the unknown.

I am not, I want a peaceful death. That's not likely to happen, such is life.

i expect it to effectively be the the exact opposite of living
and living sucks

Animals are afraid of death too. Humans are instinctially afraid of it. This leads me to believe that death sucks.
