It's mostly American democracy, which favors a first-past-the-post winner-takes-all approach to elections. Whoever is the first to win the most votes wins overall and wins completely, there's no compromise. The whole system is just completely fucked in a way that makes it impossible for there to be significant gains for anything except whichever parties were established first and reached critical mass.

I think we should move from a winner-takes-all approach to a waterfall kind of solution. You write on a voting pamphlet all the candidates you want to vote for in the order you would prefer them to win. i.e., if you were a bernie-bro you might select Bernie, then Jill Stein (if you supported her) then Clinton, then the other candidates and leave Trump/republicans you didn't like off the list. Then as your preferred candidates are eliminated your votes "roll over" to the next one. So your vote for Bernie would roll over to Stein or Clinton instead of just going into the trash. This way people could vote for parties and candidates they actually want to win instead of deciding to not vote at all or feeling forced to vote for a candidate they disagree with but feel is "less worse" than the other.

I doubt this change, or any other significant change in voting system, will ever happen though. It's too big and Congress would throw a shit fit since every congressman relies on our current system to remain and they want to stay in Congress.
