in Korean society, or just in Asian ones alone, for women there is a lot which lies in beauty.
In places like Japan, people will shun you for being what would be considered a normal weight in America or Europe, no matter your gender.

If you're ugly, you are basically worth less to society and have less of a chance to get jobs, promotions and so on.

And with the "Idol" movement this has been a bit exaggerated for women.
