They later did a non erotic version and was VERY well received, however, i preffer the original, i feel that you really need those erotic bits to trully feel the story.
For example, in the scene when asuka is dead and the real asuka made shinji allucinate that he was fucking her, in the non-erotic version they just kissed.
I mean, yeah, sure, you get the story, but those details add a lot more to the plot.
