This is all because of net neutrality.

We have to stop it.

Or are we for it?

I forget.

What one makes it so we can't watch Netflix or be anonymous?

We need Net Neutrality so the internet service providers don't act like a mafia.
>>
>>38331157

Just like phone calls, you dont have a right to my search history, comcast cant charge me the "4chan users fee" allowing me to access otherwise blocked site for an additional 19.95 if i bundle with cable, ($69.69 if i dont)

net neutrality ends on the 16th or 17th of this month. All 4chan users can be sold out by ISPs to anybody who wants to pay, along with user habits, demographics, and other personal information

Anyone here for it?

Or against it, fuck I forgot what one is the good one.

What is net neutrality?
>>
>>38331641

TLDR

>Basically obama made FCC enforce laws that protected user privacy

>trump becomes president

>makes former vonage CEO or something head of FCC

>companies push to get rid of FCC privacy protection and anti discrimination rules becasue it hurts business

>trump MAGA

Net neutrality means companies cannot discriminate becasue you go to too many anime and MLP sites by charging you a special user fee, without it, they can charge whatever they want for any website they want

Not a free market.
A free space.
Those are two distinct ideas.
The "Free Market" is a dictatorship of the capital itself. While singular investors might not have a meaningful impact, collectively their money does.
>>
>>38331733
OK so this is all trumps fault?

How is he selling it to the people? How will this make america more great?

And let me get this straight, say I use Netflix or youtube and then Comcast can charge me extra because it takes up more bandwidth or whatever?
>>
>>38332061

because it will allow companies to make profit and increase GDP, then the wealth will get distributed,

and the idea is that companies like ATT who own HBO can charge you 5$ to use HBO but if you dont want ATT and still want HBO they can charge you 100$

also they can slow your internet because someone else paid more for bandwidth than you, you can basically auction with internet speeds
>>

Since when did I say it was to be a free market? And even if I did say that, you can't blindly suck corporate dick without expecting to get fucked even if you somehow think they're on your side. There are some things the government should not get their hands on, but to just blindly trust companies like Comcast and Verizon who are notorious for being shady fucks (and I should know considering I had to deal with them in the past) is absolutely absurd and completely detrimental to everyone that isn't the board of said companies.

>"if you want the fastest connections use Facebook and YouTube, they're paying for the priority" says the ISP
>"well that sounds reasonable" says the normie horde
>meanwhile you try and make a new innovative video hosting site, but can't afford the special treatment from the ISP without a ton of ads
>"your site is nice, but it's too slow/too many ads. I'm going back to normiebook instead"
Replace with any top dog website or service. There's no one that benefits from this but the biggest corporations. If that increases GDP so be it but it could be stifling to small internet businesses

>>
>>38332176

Its like gas prices, most places have laws where people cant price gouge to make money off of something needed for survival for everyday life

When you tell companies its okay to charge whatever they want, and people who need to use the product to do things to live still need the service, they are forced to do anything for the company.

Its like on porr countries with no water, the people who can afford to dril lwells do so, and then charge people their entire months earnings just o get barely enough water to survive, just to keep them paying into a shitty service because they have no other options

>>38332248

tl:dr

>companies will help other companies who pay them big money or are freinds, but when someone tries to use their reagular service in a new way that they dont like will get bent over

Well fuck, I mean there's several legitimate uses to VPNs. I guess they could respond with charging a buttload of money to allow the use of one to counter it.

Fuck these people man. What's the solution that stops these telecoms from bullying consumers?
>>
>>38332419

net neutrality is like saying you pay for phone service, but if you dial any phone numbers in a non participating local area code, you will get charged 50$ per minute even though you pay for unlimited minutes. Its not a debate with phones, but it is with the internet
>>
>>38332466
VPNs will require a license and regulation to ensure you're using it solely for business uses. Any personal usage of VPNs will constitute a few varying charges. Give it ten years. It's over. The door is shut on this shit. All you can do is pull your hand out fast enough hopefully so it doesn't get slammed the fuck off in the door.

>>
>>38332488
I think if it gets that bad, the cleverer and large enough municipalities will start their own local ISPs. Some cities already have one and customer satisfaction is generally high. The reason there are not more of them is FCC rules because the FCC is captured by the industry it's supposed to regulate.

Anyway, if it gets that bad and the public gets angry enough about it, local governments could fix it. There's technically a federal regulation against possessing marijuana, but pretty much the whole West has said 'Fuck you, we're doing our own thing and raking in the tax money.' They could about as easily say Fuck the FCC, we are going to give our citizens the service they want and rake in the money.

But people have to get angry first. I do worry it's going to get worse before it gets better, particularly in rural and GOP dominated areas.

Its kind of like roads senpai

If roads were built by the free market businesses would have to pay extra for better roads and only the biggest would profit but since the roads are controlled by the government roads are created mostly equal and the market decides which stores to support and all have an equal chance.

If the same thing happened with the internet all websites would get mostly equal footing and it would be on the quality of their content and not their speeds which determines if their successful or not

idk about trump - but if the internet were controlled by companies, hillary could very well have cut access to /pol/ and /r/the_donald and such, in an effort to bend the internet in their favor

but regardless of politics, cable companies could bundle websites together into packages like they already do with TV channels.
and consider - Netflix and streaming services are putting cable TV underground, right? so companies like comcast, who are losing business, could very well throttle netflix or hulu as a strategic effort to pull customers from them back to 'xfinity on demand'
