I know that in Japanese culture the one depicted as quietest is usually the most powerful and cool; this approach won't work in the US though, people wouldn't get it.

it is possible if you carry yourself well. i have a cousin who doesn't say much but moves with such precision and grace. and then when he does say something, it's like the cherry on top.

do keep in mind that there is a difference between being quiet and simply not knowing how to carry a conversation. make sure you practice. i grew up with very little practice and suffered socially because of it. if you're too nervous, at least practice on your own, listen to talk radio or something. don't be a prisoner in your own head. record yourself, you may cringe, but better in the private than out there.
