Honestly anon I don't think getting your undergraduate education in Japan is a good idea. Their english language options are very limited and even if you can speak Japanese at a N1 or native level the degree won't hold much weight anywhere other than Japan unless you have a degree from todai or something.

Grad school in Japan can be a better idea, they have some fairly strong grad programs in the natural sciences, (however UTokyo has fairly high standards for admission) but Japan's education system has gotten strong criticism from many for stifling innovation and having a lack of organization, as Nobel prize winner Shuji Nakamura asserts - even if you can get in it may be a better idea to go elsewhere

so yeah I don't think education in Japan is a good idea unless you are SURE your future is in Japan

2. Job was ridiculous, and it was a legit company too. High workload, ridiculous deadlines(with an expectation of no mistakes), I fucking hated that place. Textbook study/learning hiragana/katakana, then kanji combined with fun activities where you mine for vocab and put them in to an SRS software like anki.

Also read a lot, even if you're stopping to look up words in the dictionary every 30 seconds, just read as much as you can, LNs are cheap to import and VNs are free

It's a decent business idea, but highly competitive and you'll need a high amount of capital, do some research

I'm currently living in Japan after 3 years of studying the language in my home country. Ironically, the four or so japanese friends I have were people I met back home (in University, they were foreign students).

As someone who spent a year of high-school in Japan, you will be despised in a school setting if you're a good student

I was always fairly decent at Math, dabbling with multivariable calculus at the end of freshman year (went to a good boarding school which offered math classes up to elementary group theory) and when I went to Osaka my sophomore year and promptly dominated my math class, I flipped a switch. They treated me pretty well and, albeit in a condescending manner sometimes, but immediately after I got the highest math and science grades in our section (and i think in all of the school) people got absolutely asshurt, especially some of the really studious kids who couldn't believe that a gaijin could beat them, and accused me of cheating. they also have a really passive-aggressive manner of bullying and it feels horrible

it was the worst decision of my life, and I didn't get back into weeb hobbies until college.

I've heard bad things about working as an engineer in Japan

Japan has a much higher proportion of students going into engineering or physics than the US does so there's a lot more competition driving down wages - the other anon is correct that you can expect lower wages throughout your career than you could in the United States (however, the cost of living in Japan is lower than it is in most engineering heavy places in the US, especially outside of Tokyo, that being said you still aren't making great money). I don't have any hard stats on this now, but the average salary for an engineer in the States is around 80k compared to around 50k in Japan.

More than salaries the bigger issue is really employment - as an engineering student you realize how important communication is and there is little reason for Japanese companies to hire an engineer who can't speak the language they speak effectively over a native Japanese engineer. Being bilingual is much more beneficial for those in business positions than it is for STEM type employees - if you aren't around N1 in Japanese you are gonna have a hard time finding employment.
