I don't enjoy the Catholic Church having egg on it's face. I'm a non-Catholic Christian, but I think there are good Christians in the Catholic faith and I'd like to see their church get itself together for their sake.

You're taking that story too literally. Literally, no apostolic father ever interpreted that story as literally. It was supposed to represent that you must deny yourself and cut of sinful occasions if they caused you to sin such as friends family or certain habits. I gave one in my earlier post. Look at how the apostolic fathers interpreted this. I know it can seem like a copout but imagine if we got someone from the future and he heard someone say to another "break a leg" he would assume "oh they must hate each other." But you and I know that break a leg means due to it being a common saying in our culture.

So another way to know is to look at it in its context. What was the historical context and what sayings were common during the time. It's fairly common sense at times, and at others, you're gonna need a bit of historical and cultural understanding to interpret this.

First off the early church fathers met with the apostles. The 12 disciples were still alive during the the times of Paul and Peter. Clement of Rome was in fact consecrated by Saint Peter. SO when you say the apostolic fathers just had their own interpretations, it was "the" true interpretation that was handed down from Jesus.

Also, if you don't believe me then just give me one example of any church father intercepted this as literal.
