When i realized you had to learn thousands of kanji along with their two phonetic alphabets, and there are more than one dialect of japanese as well, and on top of that rare kanji that isn't even used. Without being raised in the country I doubt I'd get good.

But how far is not far at all senpai.

Gave up after not really knowing what to do after learning the Kana. Since everyone said something different, I've went the /djt/ way and tried grinding Kanji via Anki but made no progress, and the reps were getting longer so I've switched to Kanjidamage after 3 weeks, which I also gave up after about two. After that I realized I'll never stay on top and learn even one thing by myself, and finally gave up on trying to be productive.

>Learning chinese already. Have fun with a language you will never get to use in work

anon I really hope you realize that learning a language purely for business reasons is the stupidest shit you could type

Can I ask how old you are anon? And how much business do you do with the Chinese right now? Oh, not that much, but you think you will in the future? Why do you think that, has anything in your entire fucking life even pointed to that being a probability? What percent of the US workforce needs to know Chinese? And you think you will need to know it?

EVEN if you do business with Chinese it's likely that you wouldn't need to know Chinese. My uncle works for a healthcare outsourcing company and frequently goes to china for business meetings - he doesn't speak Chinese.

The ONLY good reason for learning a language is if you consume a lot of content or media in that language, or if you are 100% GUARANTEED to be working with people whose language you cannot speak yet. But learning a language on the future possibility you MIGHT need to interact with Chinese people who can't speak English when you don't even consume any Chinese media is beyond retarded

use software like Anki that helps you manage the reviewing process to learn the most common words (core 2000)

do not try to "learn the kanji" before you start learning japanese or you will never even start. just learn vocab, and learn the kanji as you go along

the goal again is to get to the stage of practicing reading compelling content as quickly as possible

That's not the /djt/ way. Or at least it didn't used to be. Haven't been in a while. There was always a small group of autists sharing shit advice, maybe they finally won out.

The /djt/ way is to read native material, and study kanji incidentally through the vocabulary you encounter.

i posted a streaming website that displays english and japanese subtitles at the same time, lets you slow down the playback speed and offers easy to use translation functions and transcripts. i found it very useful so i thought id share it.

and the answer was basically if you download 50 shows, then download 50 packs of subtitles, then rename all the subtitles to make it work right (assuming the subs work at all), then install a video player and configurate it to display japanese text (no way to make it display multiple subs at the same time though), then install a text hooker and hook it to the video player and then hook the text hooker to a translator, THEN you get almost the same functionality as that website with no registration or setup. and of course these people could do all that in less than an hour.

Cantonese is another dialect of Chinese but only spoken in Hong Kong and some surrounding areas (Guangdong). Its not very common to find Cantonese speakers. Furthermore, most Cantonese speakers now days will know Mandarin so Cantonese is pretty pointless to learn.

thats what i was saying among other things. some subs are also offline or missing so that adds another layer of searching around. and all i got back was insults about how im probably a 12 yr old that is so stupid he needs to stream.

there was also a guy that said the streaming site was shit because he has already seen all the available shows. i tried to explain to him that it makes no difference since youre mostly trying to decipher the sentences and youre not watching it purely for entertainment. so its basically just like using anki or a textbook except a little more fun. but he didnt understand that argument at all.

why would a japanese ever take JLPT. that would be like an american taking the TOEFL.

as for how foreigners can't get it:
i know a guy who read LN/VN for a few years, got curious about how he'd do on JLPT, bought an N1 study guide, challenged the test 3 months later and destroyed it with a nearly perfect score 177/180

This, especially onyomi and kunyomi which has no reason at all to exist.

im not sure what LARPing is but you sure are one snarky faggot.

The only people i know with the N1 are Hawaiian born Japs who were brought up speaking mostly english and learnt jap later in life.

I read government level documents for my last job and Kanji was never a major issue. Legal phrasing is tricky in any language though.

The actual problem with the N1 is the phrasing. Japs kinda have the same issue with the Eiken pre1 and 1 tests. The concepts brought up in the Eiken test are not ones Japanese culture preps them for. they're asked for their opinion on X and can't go beyond "i think its bad" even if they have the language skill to do so. there is a heavy emphasis on accuracy rather than nuances and expression. well n1 has the reverse problem...

although i was partly joking about the nips wanting to feel superior there is a small element of that too...

because its a thread about languages and I like contributing to those. I speak english, romanian, korean, and spanish. If you want to learn a language for the sake of communicating with people your best bets are spanish or chinese although I hate the way chinese sounds sonically.

russians are still pretty scummy but I don't have any interest in learning their language. Everybody on this planet is scum including myself, not too sure why you wouldn't want to communicate with others.

It's a thread about Japanese not languages

That's why it's called learn Japanese not learn languages

Almost 2 years now. I finished kanji like 5 months ago and been reviewing it since. I dropped core 10k vocab after a month and focused on kanji instead. Know most popular ON and KUN readings. My vocab is shit tho. Same goes for grammar. I feel like biggest autist. If manga or game doesnt use kanji i cant read it at all. Seeing romaji subs for a song in anime trigger me to hell. Just leave fucking kanji or i dont know what the song is about.
1 good way for learning vocab i found for me is sentence mining. Just play some game translate words you dont know and put them in separate anki deck. It feels like collecting rare pepes. They feel more personal. You feel like god recreating broken into pieces world by collecting the puzzles.
Also i put some anime girl as wallpaper and imagine she is speaking to me. My tulpa speaks japanise too so i dont need these shitty soc websites.

Dutchfag here (Netherlands), I just started learning languages as a hobby. Currently I don't know shit but I started with Russian, French and Japanese.

The most progress I had with Russian though it is not the easiest language to learn, I was the most motivated to learn it because I like the sound of it and culture behind it.

French I kind neglected halfway through because I lost interest in it for some reason. Maybe because it's not unique enough. I even forgot everything I learned the past few months because I neglected my progress. So now I'm at level 1 here.

As for Japanese it seems really hard as fuck, currently I'm only learning how to write and draw all the Hiragana, and currenly I've memorised about 50% of them.

Thanks for reading my blogpost faggots, as you can see I was eager to find a language thread. Also duolingo is a very nice tool to use, though you shouldn't rely on it alone (duh sounds obvious, but many people make that mistake)

iPadfag here what's the best way to go about learning kanji?
>>
I want to learn but I would have no one to talk to and learning just for watching animes seems autismo.

>tfw you will never move to japan on a work visa as a lowly gaijin and learn Japanese with a qt while teaching her English and get a marriage citizenship

I don't understand how to look up kanji you don't know?

Where do you find 'something easy'. Most of the stuff I picked up didn't have much furigana at all
