Some selfish relic from the past back in the days when the church was the state. They outlawed suicide because it was the ultimate form of tax evasion and made people doubtful that the powers of god could actually fix anything.
Attempting suicide in some places is considered a crime for tax evasion.

And people don't want people in their social circle to die no matter how peripheral they may be apparently.

Most people can't imagine being so depressed that they'd be driven to kill themselves. It's very alien and scary to them.
