why do people think it's a hygiene issue? The reason women have hair there is 1. because like arm-pits it's a friction-zone where hair prevents chafing and irritation, and 2. because the hair helps wick AWAY nasty substances rather than leaving them on the skin's surface (which could lead to skin irritation and increased chance of infection).

Shaving and waxing not only opens up wounds on the skin's surface, but increases skin irritation from daily movement and increases the amount of waste matter accumulating on the skin where it poses the largest threat (particularly with all those little cuts). That's not hygienic at all.

The only reason to shave is for aesthetic purposes, a much more sensible option entirely is to simply trim it to a neat length.
