how is it a lost sale if the person pirating the game had no plans on buying the game anyway? It's not like the person downloading the game is preventing other people from buying the game.

This. When we literally copied that floppy in the 80s we didn't give a shit. Used a Redbox to make free phone calls too, theft of services. I spend way more on games and music now than I ever would have back then even if I paid for everything I pirated. 8 bit Nintendo games were $40. Gta5 was just on sale for like $30. Things were way more expensive.
