Yeah it is actually better to not pal around with your co-workers at all. Chances are they don't even like you very much and they are usually pretty cringey people in my experience if not drug addicts

This. Unless they're lifeless losers who'll try to make company get togethers so they'll have "friends"
Its good to be friendly with people but you don't need to form friendships with them outside of work.
Depends on your line of work I think. In most cases as long as you're cordial and seem like a generally nice person I think you'll be fine. Work can actually be a good way to make friends, so if there's someone you get along with, go for it. But if not don't stress it.
There are probably some exceptions for certain types of jobs, though. I work in finance where image can be important. If you're in an environment like that you need to play things by ear.
