Most go to school for years. I'm self-learned. I'm not confident enough to claim it's the right way to go but I started with computers when I was 2 in 95 and have parents that are engineers. So I've always been exposed to this.
I got my first job through mom. She has been working in the industry for over two decades now so she has contacts. I tagged along when she went to Cebit (an IT industry expo) and got in contact with some of the people on that trip.

How you get started learning i wouldn't really know since my mom started teaching me C. I suggest you go to >>>/g/dpt .
They know a lot. But they don't tend to take the 'how do I get started' questions seriously. I'm not sure how you'd prove to a company that you're competent without contacts or a diploma. There's been lots of talk about if college education is really all that beneficial for these positions. More and more companies seem to think it's not important. (I've heard DICE Sweden for instance publicly state that they don't consider a game developer degree a merit, extreme case) And overall the industry has moved towards interviews that actually has you demonstrate your knowledge.
Software development isn't a single field either. There's web development, embedded. All kinds. I'm not sure what's the best place to go in any way really. I started out in embedded (like mom) but now I do application development. Backend for an online gambling company.

So I'm sorry I can't give you all that much. I think the best way to go about things is to find someone who works where you think you might want to work an ask/interview them. People are quite open to respond to serious emails, even from strangers.

But is suspect if you ask /dpt/ there's gonna be a fuzz about what language to start with. I don't believe it's that important. Lots of things carry over. Especially what you learn early on is almost universal.
