I went to school for mechanical engineering. You can go for naval architecture also, probably a more direct route. There is a shortage of young people doing it, so it isn't a bad path to take. It's more interesting than automotive in my opinion. There is a lot of tribal knowledge with it, so for sure working with boats from a young age helps.
