OP here usually when your just playing your actually using chords and you might not notice. like sometimes i dint notice i was playing the em or em7 chord when i was messing around the first few days

Depends on the preceeding chord or the proceeding chord sometimes.

Think of it like this: play a G (a proper G, not the lazy one) and simply shift your hand so your ring finger stays on fret 3 of the B string, your index finger basically barring fret 2 on e and G strings.

Make sense?

Now imagine you're playing a song with a lot of D variants. It may make sense to use your middle and index fingers for fret 2 and pinky for fret 3 on B then. (Middle on G, index on e) and maybe index on fret 1 on B.

For example, I'd play it that way if I'm going D-Dmaj7-D7 a lot. D, barre G and B by dropping the middle finger, lift for D7 with index waiting for it.

Hard to explain in text m8.

If you like TMBG think of the interlude in "it's not my birthday" and you'll see. It's D-D7-G-E-A

In practice that's ring and middle on G and e, index on B, pinky in B also, quick shift to G, rotate to E, barre D G and B with middle for an A, drop down to repeat.

A good song for learning to transition quickly between common chords is "experimental film" by TMBG.

G-F-C-D-Em-Am-D-G twice for the verse
Then Em-C-D-G twice, Em-Am-D-G once and Em-C-Am-G once for pre-chorus

The chorus bit is literally just C-D-G-A7 with one slight change for the end bit.

Anyway TMBG is a great band to learn on. Cover their stuff and it'll take you pretty far.
