One of my main goals in life is to move somewhere with both community and a culture. I live in the suburban United States, and it feels so soulless that I can't help but dislike it. Often in my fantasies I imagine myself living somewhere far-off and pretty like Switzerland, where people respect me. And with a lot of work, I could eventually live there, but I feel it would be wrong. See, I dislike where I live because there's a bunch of dispassionate outsiders who don't give a fuck about the place or the people who live in it. But if I moved to some obscure location and lived in solitude like I do, I'd be committing the same error. Even if I attempted to engage with the community and participate in local things, I'd be making it more foreign and dull as a result. No one would ever see me as more than an outsider, and I'd feel like a leech on an otherwise pleasant thing in the long run. For those of you who've ever wanted to live in Japan, you probably know this feel all too well.

Anyone know what I mean? How about some of your own vague life fantasies?

>want to move from burger to rural Finland
>Finnish is probably one of the hardest languages in the world to learn, even Finns talk about how fucking stupid nonsensical their language is
>almost full robot socially, can't fit in even in my own home country anyway
>Finnish isn't spoken anywhere else, even Swedish or Japanese would be a more rewarding language to learn for literally any other path in life (if i ever decided against Finland later on)

looking for culture is pathetic and probably the source ideology of suburbs
>not creating your own culture where cultureless society has colonized

Probably, yeah. I often delude myself into thinking that the average Euro is pretty intelligent, but I have confirmation bias. Normalfags are everywhere, and they don't vary much.

I live in Switzerland (OC pic related) and I think I'd like to live in a big american city like New York. Guess the grass is always greener on the other side.

That's true. I'm tempted to ask how you could get bored of those views, but I get it, honestly. The drive to my workplace is incredibly scenic, and lots of people are moving here because of it. It's in the South, and there are lots of comfy houses against the road by the trees with lots of open space. The first time I saw it, I loved it, but now it's just standard to me.

What is the appeal of New York to you?

Many things I guess, I've visited it once. The city never sleeps, always something going on, the anonymity you can enjoy, not everyone knows your name or what you do, always a place open, it's just, energy, life, I dunno, I like the general feeling to it.

Switzerland can be quite boring in contrast.

Fair enough. Just make sure you have a good way to make a living, since city life is quite expensive on the whole.

Is it true that the Swiss are kind of xenophobic? I know it's one of the hardest countries to immigrate to, and you have to fit in culturally in order to become a citizen.

There are a lot of swiss people that are, yes, but mostly against people with brown to black skin color or against muslims

As an american you would fit in way better than let's say, someone immigrating from turkey.

It also depends where in switzerland you'd settle down. There are multicultural cities like Basel, where I live most of the time, then there are places more central in Switzerland where immigrants aren't as welcome.

And yes, to become an actual citizen is a really hard thing in Switzerland. You have to live here for years and even then have to prove that you fit in culturally and are well integrated etc. It's a really rigorous process.

Oh, I assumed you were in one of those isolated spots due to your picture. Do you know about the job situation? I'd like to try and work there after I finish college, but lining up a job appears extremely difficult for monolingual Americans who aren't specialists in anything.

Fuck id kill to live there, don't move to New York. There is plenty of financial jobs in Switzerland if that is your thing. Your "cities" are big enough
>>
>>37955385
Holy shit, I would give anything to live there. Big cities are nice for a few years, but they take a toll. You start to feel boxed in, stuck, and trapped

Community and culture are dying, they basically survive only as tourist attractions. Villages are emptying as the elder pass away, while small towns become more and more "civilized".

In mountain areas culture is very small scale, basically not much more than family-level. Nowadays only grampas are part of it, it's rare for younger people to genuinely experience it and almost impossible for foreigners.

That being said, it actually means there is space available for anyone who wants to come. Pic related, you could buy some goats and spend your time roaming free in the woods and fields with them, living in old chalets.

It's a rustic life and not for everyone, not sure it's what you had in mind, but this is what culture is like in places like Switzerland.

>Move to Los Angeles or somewhere big and prosperous
>Lose weight and become amateur model
>Eventually upgrade to small time actor or soul train dancer or something
>Eventually get noticed by a record label and become an huge alternative singer

But instead im 22 living in Pgh in the east coast...jobless and barely surviving college..

>where people respect me
Yeah, about that, if you weren't born there, good fucking luck.
