I think "equal" is closer to "we all deserve the same basic human rights" and has less to do with our individual and personal characteristics. The rich person isn't "better" than the poor or middle class person because if you were "better" you could be rude and stuff with no consequences.

It's a very polysemic word, and they are better: better genes, better education, better infancy, better social influences, etc, etc. Not in the sense that we live in a chaste system (which we obviously don't).
