They used dip pens, which made for passably legible handwriting, because of stroke variation, and because everyone used the shoulder technique, which required a lot more practice than just using your fingers, so only upper middle class Americans knew how to write.
Then fountain pens came along. At least they were still hard to use and required control which contributed to decent handwriting.
But noooooo. Freaky ballpoint pens ruined everyone's handwriting.

I agree with you, but why did they abandon using dip pens or fountain pens? They forced handwriters to be more careful about writing lending legibility to their penmanship.
Ballpoint pens are cheap, but god damn, a lot of people have shitty handwriting because ballpens require no more than using your fingers and people have the bad habit of cramping their hands while writing.
The only exception I can think of is Thomas Aquinas. He still had shit handwriting even in the old days.

Something cheap, easily done by the masses is always going to triumph over something that has to be produced with tons of care and skill. You'd rather buy a machine crafted cheap item or food than pay someone for the same item, albeit with better quality 10x the price.
Basically if there is a cheap simple alternative, it's going to become dominant. The printing press for example.

It was to make writing faster and minimized how much ink dried in your quill or pen when it wasn't on paper. It's obsolete now (most schools dont teach it) because typing then just copy pasting it infinite times is much faster

God I hate cursive. They tried to teach it to me in elementary school but I straight up couldn't learn it.

I graduated high school in '96 and we stopped using it essentially in 9th grade, stuff needed to either be printed of done on a computer from that point on. My University course notes are in cursive.
