My hobbies are programming, reading news, collecting documentaries, and trying not to kill myself. I doubt people would want to talk about that.

Often stories from their lives I think, Old classmate of mine, regular job, social life, wife and kid, typically always give some amusing stories from stuff he's done and people he met, rather vividly told. About how he was washing off his car at a gas station and got attacked by some gang of 15 year olds, or how he was visiting some guy who wanted to show him his new excavator and managed to drag down the entire garage when doing so etc
The news and whatever documentaries you've seen can be a pretty good pick I think. Suicide is a given fubar of course.

Fair point. I don't have any fun stories to tell but politics, world news and documentaries is at least a feasible topic, dry as it might be
