Think about the scale of the r-selected species. Until humans start colonizing other planets (and exhibiting r-selection traits in the process), by far the most successful organisms are r-selected. Being smart won't matter in 1 million years if we don't get off this space rock, but there will be tons of faster-breeding and quicker evolving species that do survive.

I like the idea as a whole, and I think there's a discussion to be had about humans becoming more r-selective in order to survive beyond our doomed existence on earth.
