these jobs are flooded with applicants. it's everyone's go-to choice for 'i need a job where do i apply' so they get insane numbers of applications. like, my local walmart holds applications for 3 months according to policy. at any given time during the past 3 months they've received between 1050-1200 applications. that's almost 100 a week. most of them with strong references and plenty of experience. that's the kind of competition you can expect for a handful of minimum wage openings at walmart. mcdonalds is even worse since they have even fewer openings.

it's actually easier to find skilled work because the pool of applicants is so much smaller.
